- Visit Chefchaouen and it's very quiet city
Hello everyone, I decided to share a post dedicated to Chefchaouen to give you some addresses and tips for visiting Chefchaouen.
This small town in the Rif is located in the north of Morocco. Many travelers come to visit Chefchaouen after having fallen under the spell of the alleys of the medina that we see in many photographs of Morocco.
This post, entirely dedicated to Chefchaouen, aims to make you want to visit Chefchaouen but also to share with you some addresses and tips to better discover the city and know what to do in Chefchaouen.
Visit Chefchaouen: what to do in Chaouen?
Almost all
of Chefchaouen's points of interest, also called Chaouen, are located in the
medina.
The medina
is quite small and the alleys are very beautiful, colorful and pleasant to
stroll around. We are very far from the busy medinas of Marrakech or Fez. Here,
you can walk calmly, at your own pace without having to dodge mopeds or donkeys
loaded with skins !
You will
therefore be able to take most of the streets in the medina of Chefchaouen.
In key
points not to be missed, I will place at the top of the list the main square of
the medina, the Uta el-Hammam square. True heart of the medina, it is a meeting
point, a place for discussion and the place to sit in the medina thanks to the
many cafes.
On this
square, we find the big mosque of the city and the kasbah which we can visit.
The gardens of the kasbah are very pleasant. When you want to visit
Chefchaouen, it's a bit of a must!
To the
northeast, bordering the medina, is the Ras el Ma spring and you can see women
washing their clothes, old fashioned. Very quiet corner, soothing and with a
nice little cafe, by the water!
Finally,
each corner of the medina offers a magical view of the alleys of the city or of
the mountains surrounding the medina. Visiting Chefchaouen is also taking your
time and immersing yourself in the lifestyle of the inhabitants of Chefchaouen,
very different from the hectic pace of the big cities of Morocco! As with all
medinas in Morocco, visiting Chefchaouen is above all getting lost in the
alleys of the city and walking around without a specific goal. Just open your
eyes and wait for the meetings.
What to do in the surroundings of Chefchaouen
After you
have finished your visit to Chefchaouen, you might rightly be tempted to want
to visit the surroundings of Chefchaouen. Several excursions can be considered.
As is often
the case, it is better to have a rental car to be fully autonomous and avoid
being constrained by bus schedules, especially if you are traveling for a
fairly short period.
Another
alternative to the rental car in Morocco, opt for a day trip by taxi but it
will cost you more!
First
possible visit, Talassemtane National Park. Ideal for a trek, the park offers
magnificent mountain landscapes!
In the north
of the park, do not miss the Akchour waterfall or the Pont de Dieu (natural
arch in the rock).
The medina
of Tétouan is also very pleasant, with its white houses and alleys. You can
spend half a day there. If you go from Tangier to Chefchaouen by bus, the bus
will stop at Tétouan, so you can easily stop there and take a bus the next day
(or later in the day if possible, or even finish the journey by grand taxi).
Finally, visiting Chefchaouen without climbing the heights of the city would be a mistake! In the immediate vicinity of Chefchaouen, you can stroll in the surrounding mountains by starting your journey at the Chefchaouen water source (ras el ma). At the beginning of the path, you may be accosted by some young people who will want to sell you locally produced resin. Don't be afraid, continue on your way. If the season is right, you will find many fig trees on your route, something to enjoy on the route!
At the start of this path, turn around and admire the panorama of the medina! This walk can be done on foot from the medina of Chefchaouen.
